What is Sugilite?

Sugilite was discovered in 1944, but it was only recognized as a mineral in 1976. It is most commonly found in massive or granular form, and rarely found as crystals; when crystals do occur, they are small- less than 2cm across. Its color can be pale to deep pink, brownish-yellow, or purple, with deep hues of the latter commanding the most value. It is always cut en cabochon when used a gemstone, while pebbles are sometimes polished in rock tumblers. Sugilite is named after its co-discovered, Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi.
